The first group of Vons shoppers gather outside the Nipomo Vons just prior to its opening, September 20, 2000 at 8:00 a.m.

For decades the community of Nipomo was without a major grocery store chain.  Some may have thought that quaint–I was not one of them.  Finally, in September 2000, Nipomo came of age and Vons opened its doors.  I was the outgoing President of the Nipomo Chamber of Commerce at the time.  I attended that opening and took the following photos of that historic event here in Nipomo. Nipomo continues to grow and change; but, Vons’ opening was one of the most significant events in its history.  More photos after the jump.

Finally, after decades of waiting, the first Nipomo Vons is opened.

Probably the most empty Vons has ever been on a weekday morning at 8:00 a.m.

Pete, the original manager plays some type of spin the wheel game giving away prizes. We miss you Pete, where ever you currently are the manager. Best of luck.
